NEW BERN ANTIQUE SHOW FEBRUARY 10 – 12 AT THE NEW BERN RIVERFRONT CONVENTION CENTER

New Bern, NC - The New Bern Preservation Foundation will hold their annual New Bern Antique Show & Sale at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center Friday through Sunday, February 10-12, 2012. “This year’s show promises to have something for everyone of every age,” says Show Chair Etteinne Mitchell.

In the midst of New Bern’s historic downtown, the Convention Center will host 45 professional antique dealers for the Valentine’s weekend. These dealers will offer 18th through 20th Century furniture, crystal, jewelry, rugs, paintings, prints, linens, silver, glass, toys, books, and everything from antique buttons to memorabilia.

In addition, on Saturday and Sunday professional identifiers will be available to evaluate items brought to the show. The valuations are FREE to show attendees. Attendees will be limited to two items.

There will be raffles for cash prizes and numerous non-cash prizes such as helicopter flights and boat trips.

Show times are 10 am to 5pm on Friday and Saturday and 11 am to 4:30 pm on Sunday.

A ticket to the show covers admission for all three days. Tickets are $7.00 in advance or $8.00 at the door. They may be purchased in advance at the New Bern Preservation Foundation, Mitchell Hardware, and Harris Teeter. All proceeds from the Antique Show will benefit the preservation activities of the Foundation.

ABOUT THE NEW BERN PRESERVATION FOUNDATION: Since its founding in 1972, the Foundation has saved, restored, and preserved over 60 historic structures, caused three New Bern neighborhoods to be accepted by the National Register of Historic Places, worked with NCDOT to preserve a portion of Craven County’s historic brick road system, and added immeasurable value to New Bern as an attractive tourist destination. The Foundation buys or accepts historic properties, stabilizes them, and then sells them for restoration pursuant to contractual covenants with buyers requiring, among other things, that they be restored to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. Currently the Foundation has started a project to save and restore historic Union Station in New Bern.

One of the biggest events of the holiday season!

One of the biggest events of the holiday season is Christmas Candlelight at Tryon Palace. It is the rare chance to travel back in time to witness what Christmas was like in the 18th century. Hailed by Time magazine in its Christmas Top 10, Christmas Candlelight occurs only twice each year: the two middle Saturdays in December, this year on December 10 and 17, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. each evening.

Musicians and colonial entertainers can be found both on the Palace grounds and in the North Carolina History Center. This magical evening is topped off with a spectacular grand illumination fireworks display on the South Lawn.

At this year’s Christmas Candlelight celebration, history comes alive in 1772 colonial New Bern with fascinating characters, elegant dancers and merry musicians. As well as celebrating the recent birth of a baby girl, Governor Martin and his family are marking King George III’s birthday, an event celebrated every year in Britain and colonial America for the reigning monarch. In addition, the Martins are preparing for the holidays, so the Governor’s Palace is beautifully decorated with candles and much greenery for the season.

Outside, the townspeople of New Bern have turned out to see the great folk arrive at the Palace and celebrate these festive events in their own way. Governor Martin has employed circus performers, musicians, and other entertainments to provide merriment for his guests and the townspeople, including a fireworks display at the end of the evening. In the Kitchen Office, the servants in the house have been busy for days preparing for the evening’s entertainment, which has only been made more difficult by the Martin children. At the local coffee house, eavesdrop as patrons not only exchange lighthearted banter, but also debate weighty issues of the day. From Palace dancing to political debates, this evening of pleasantries will also illuminate a pivotal time in our nation’s history.

Tours of the Governor’s Palace and site are scheduled on the hour, although there’s also plenty of other celebration on site and in the North Carolina History Center, where there are ongoing performances and activities for the whole family. You can even do a little holiday shopping at the Museum Store and the Holiday Craft and Garden Shop behind the Stable Office, which will both be open during the Candlelight celebrations.

Tickets for Christmas Candlelight at Tryon Palace are $20 adults and $10 students (grades 1-12). It is recommended that tickets be purchased in advance, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., at the North Carolina History Center, 529 S. Front St. (at Metcalf) in New Bern, or by calling 252-639-3524 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

This year, Tryon Palace is offering a holiday special. $25 per adult provides entrée to both the Christmas Candlelight celebration and the Twelfth Night party at the Stanlys, to be held on Thursday, January 5 at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. or 8 p.m.! Twelfth Night, the last night of Christmas festivities, transports the guests back to January 5th in the year 1803, to a time of mirth and merrymaking. Designed for the enjoyment of adults, there will be entertainments and light refreshments of the era. Who knows, you may be crowned King and Queen of the evening! Carolina Violin Ensemble perform Christmas Carols

"Carolina Violin Ensemble," under the direction of Chris Gawlik, will be performing a Christmas concert at the Bank of the Arts in New Bern on 16 December, 6-7:00 pm. Chris Gawlik studied violin performance at the Krakow Conservatory and subsequently became a member of the Krakow
Philharmonic Orchestra.

He performed throughout Europe prior to immigrating to the United States, where he then established Gawlik Violin Co. in Greenville in 1993.

As a violin maker, he has a complete understanding of the workings of the violin itself. As a teacher, he strives to use the best aspects of the Suzuki Method in combination with some traditional techniques to produce highly competent and proficient musicians with technical and musical mastery.

For this year’s performance, Mr. Gawlik has chosen a select group of violin students to perform your favorite Christmas carols. In addition, Chris will perform Baroque violin duets with his wife, Mei Gawlik. Mrs. Gawlik also teaches violin at Gawlik Violin Co. and performs with professional orchestras throughout the South. New Bern Parks & Recreation is pleased to bring you the 27^th Annual Coastal Christmas Flotilla on December 3^th. The Flotilla was founded in 1984 by The Swiss Bear and a number of boaters from the Eastern Carolina Yacht Club. These groups, in association with the avid boaters of the New Bern area, have made this one of the premiere holiday events in Eastern North Carolina. This tradition has been carried on by the Lower Neuse Initiative, and for the past 9 years, New Bern Parks & Recreation. The flotilla features various types of water craft, from small boats to large yachts, all decorated in their own unique way. The parade of boats will start at the Eastern Carolina Yacht Club, sail down the Trent River past the Hilton New Bern/Riverfront approximately 6:00pm, then on to Union Point Park, Council Bluff Green Park, and back. Throughout this day full of festive events, the downtown stores will be open to Christmas shoppers. The 27^th Annual Coastal Christmas Flotilla would not be possible without our dedicated supporters.

You can visit Santa every Friday (4:00 to 8:00 pm), Saturday (10:00 am to 5:00 pm), and Sunday (12:00 to 4:00 pm) at our beautifully decorated Santa’s House located in festive Bear Plaza (Middle Street between Pollock and S. Front Streets) through Saturday, December 24 (10:00 am to 2:00 pm). Have your picture taken with Santa (for just $5!). Leave Santa a letter with your “wish list” and return address in Santa’s Mail Box, and Santa will answer all letters to good girls and boys! While visiting Santa, drop off a toy for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program or canned food for the Religious Community Service (RCS). Note, drop offs will only be accepted when the Santa House is open.

Lights, lights, lights, all over downtown! Every Friday from November 25 until December 16, there are two Dickens of a Christmas Trolley Tours (scheduled for 5:30 and 7:00 pm). Enjoy a one-hour guided tour of New Bern’s Historic Downtown Business District. This will be a wonderful and fun opportunity to see the unique decorations and lights that our downtown merchants will showcase, and your chance to learn about New Bern’s interesting history and unique architecture. “It’s a Wonderful Wreath” decorating contest for our downtown businesses and shops was such a hit last year, we are bringing it back bigger and better, and incorporating the “Dickens Detective” treasure map. It’s a fun way to get the whole family involved in the Christmas Spirit. Although the “Dickens Detective” is designed for ages 6 thru 12, anyone can do it! All you have to do is pick up a map at any business that has a wreath and the hunt is on! Bring your camera to not only capture the lasting memories created by your visit to downtown New Bern, take your photo at the Kissing Stations and as a Dickens character in the “passé-tetes,” a Dickens-themed “head-in-a-hole” in Bear Plaza. These photo opportunities are quickly becoming holiday traditions!

Tryon Palace is offering 250 years of America’s holiday traditions with “Music, Mirth, and Merriment,” from November 25, 2011 – January 5, 2012. This historic site will celebrate the season with special programs, tours, and craft activities throughout the month and will display seasonal decorations from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Experience an eighteenth-century candlelit Christmas celebration during the Grand Illumination Saturdays, December 10 and 17, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. The evening includes a tour through the Palace (and perhaps a word or two with Governor Tryon!), performances by Tryon Palace’s Fife and Drum Corps and Jonkonnu troupe, and an assortment of performers. The evening ends with a grand illumination (fireworks) over the South Lawn. The tours of the Palace during the Grand Illumination are timed tours, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Christ Episcopal Church, located in the 300 block of Pollock Street, will sponsor a Community Sing of your favorite Christmas carols at 6:00 pm on Thursday, December 15.

-“Christmas in-a-Shoebox” is the story of the Stewarts, a family of sharecroppers who reside in rural North Carolina two miles outside of Kinston. On this midday, we find them gathered in the living room of their small plank farmhouse two days before Christmas in the early 1960’s. Snow is falling as they sing holiday songs. Mama and Daddy Stewart, along with their two grandchildren, are heading to town in the old pick-up truck. Left behind are six other children. Sibling bantering, an unexpected guest, a special cake, an advancing snow storm and a stranger on the muddy path make this a hilarious original family play, reminding us of a distant time no more and the true meaning of Christmas. CIVIL WAR WEEKEND AT TRYON PALACE CONFEDERATE LIFE IN NEW BERN

Experience the outbreak of the Civil War through the eyes of the New Bern residents who lived it. Throughout the weekend, tours of the historic Dixon and Stanly houses will focus on New Bern during the time of the war’s outbreak to the Battle of New Bern and its subsequent occupation. In addition, Tryon Palace will be offering several theatrical and musical programs that bring to life the reality of the Civil War through many different perspectives.

Several performances feature Sparky and Rhonda Rucker, who perform in the U.S. and overseas, singing songs and telling stories from the American folk tradition. Sparky Rucker has been performing over forty years and is internationally recognized as a leading folklorist, musician, historian, storyteller, and author. Rhonda Rucker is an accomplished harmonica, piano, banjo, and bones player, and also adds vocal harmonies to their songs. Sparky and Rhonda have performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, as well as NPR's On Point, Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, and Morning Edition. The Ruckers have also been featured tellers at the International Storytelling Center and Festival.

On Saturday, March 12, as part of the 2011 Garden Lecture Series, Tryon Palace will present “Selecting Successful Street Trees”. The lecture will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the North Carolina History Center’s Cullman Performance Hall, 529 S. Front Street in New Bern and is free to the public, courtesy of a grant by the Harold H. Bate Foundation.

Trees provide many benefits to communities. They provide privacy, enhance landscape, improve air quality, conserve water, and provide food and protection for wildlife. Most trees are planted to provide beauty and shade. Dr. Tom Glasgow, Craven County Director of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Program, will share his research and experience with trees that are attractive and survive the harsh conditions along urban streets and parking lots. He will also discuss New Bern’s recent tree planting on Broad and Metcalf Streets.

Dr. Glasgow will describe how the most successful approach is to select trees to match site conditions and limitations, based upon a thorough site assessment, and will elaborate on the diversity of tree species that are part of a successful tree planting program.

The New Bern Preservation Foundation will hold its annual Antique Show at the New Riverfront Convention Center the weekend of 11-13 February in 2011.

Over 45 professional dealers will offer 18th through 20th Century furniture, decorative items and memorabilia - literally something for everyone of every age.

On Saturday and Sunday, Identifiers will be available to evaluate personal items brought to the show.

Tickets are $7.50 at the door and good for all three days.

ADA MAE will arrive at Skipjack Landing at the foot of Pollock Street, beside Persimmons Reataurant and off load beautiful Christmas trees and wreaths for the holiday season. Trees and wreaths will be available for purchase at that time until Christmas. This annual fund raiser helps support educational programs in science and math for students onboard the skipjack ADA MAE. Programs are provided by Carolina Coastal Classrooms. Join us Friday, December 31, 2010, downtown New Bern, for a fun and family-centered New Year’s celebration entitled “Encore - Our Year in Review”. The festivities begin at 3:00 pm with “A Portrait of New Bern”. Everyone is invited to Union Point Park where a community picture will be staged to commemorate the final day of our 300th year. We want you present for this community group photo – the more the better. Immortalize this special year while visiting with friends and neighbors as we help make history.

The culmination of a full day will be highlighted by the Grand March to Union Point Park. Participants highlight “Our Year in Review” procession representing events from throughout our 300th year in costume and in spirit. The colorful procession leads once again to Union Point Park for a memorable finale at 9:00 p.m. The early evening allows time for children to enjoy being with family and for late night seekers to pursue other midnight fun.

The mission of the Dickens of a Christmas holiday celebration is to make downtown New Bern a destination for shoppers and visitors while creating memories and developing family traditions. After the portrait, stay awhile at the park for dedication ceremonies for our 2010 time capsule. We’ll capture our year and make it timeless storing memories and memorabilia for future generations to enjoy. Following the ceremony, grab the kids and head for the Riverfront Convention Center. Where families will enjoy magic shows, games, bouncy houses, dancing and more. Tryon Palace also will offer its unique brand of fun and entertainment that you won’t want to miss. In addition, downtown New Bern warms the spirit with “Meet me on Middle”, an ongoing end-of-year meeting place featuring lively entertainment, interactive activities, 300^th keepsakes, and much more. The Downtown Council of the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce announces its 3rd annual Dickens of a Christmas Celebration, November 26 - December 31, 2010.

In March of 2008, a group of Downtown merchants started talking about the fact that they usually waited until October to start planning for Christmas and it was really too late to plan anything significant. Later that month they formed a committee to brainstorm about a theme and what could be done to make New Bern's Historic Business District special during Christmas.

"We are really excited this year about all the new attractions we have for the season," says Chair of the committee, Janet Francoeur of Carolina Creations.

"We started out three years ago with the theme ‘A Dickens of a Christmas,’ and each year since we've stepped it up a little. Each member of our committee has contributed something really special to the event."

Janet and Carol Tokarski (Craven Arts Council Executive Director) painted 18 storyboards the first year, telling the story of "A Christmas Carol" in shop windows. Last year ten more were added. The story begins in the window of the Chelsea and ends in the window of the Civic Theatre on Pollock Street. See the map on page 11 for more details. The idea is that you can walk or drive your car and read the story as you go.

This year the addition is not more storyboards but a game designed by Mary Davidson of the Four C's, called "Be a Dickens Detective." You'll pick up a game sheet at any business that has a storyboard in its window. There will be a hidden clue in each storyboard. "The game is like a word jumble and when you're finished, the answer will spell out a Dickens-themed phrase," Mary says. Designed for ages 6-12, this game can be played by anyone. Take the solved puzzle to one of the businesses listed on the back of the puzzle for a prize or discount. It is a fun way to get the family engaged in the holiday spirit!

Santa has been in our Downtown for more years than anyone can remember, and he’s back! Lisa Edwards of AG Salem & Associates, PLLC, CPA's heads the committee to decorate Bear Plaza and the Santa House. Last year she and her committee painted and restored the outside of the House and turned the Plaza into a wonderland. This year they have remodeled the interior and "it looks like something out of a magazine (the North Pole Magazine!), really over the top!" says Lisa. The Plaza is decorated with thousands of lights, plus a North Pole sign and a mailbox for letters to Santa (both designed by Joan Ziemba of The Accidental Artist).

We are really excited about a fun, new Dickens-themed photo opportunity called a passé-tetes, or a head-in-a-hole. Bob Klein of The Haymaker's Wife worked with a local sign company to design a board that you can stick your head through and become Bob Cratchit or Tiny Tim. When Bob designed the board, he included 2011 and "New Bern, NC" on it! A clever way to track your photos and create a new holiday tradition!

Lighting the streets and buildings with thousands of lights was spear-headed by Greg Smith with Mitchell Hardware. "The first year we put luminaries out each Friday evening. In 2009 we switched and wrapped about 150 poles with lights, and this year we've added that many again!" Downtown businesses contribute money to purchase the lights and the City of New Bern installs them. Vicki Vitale of New Bern ArtWorks suggested lighting the buildings, too! Vicki visited every business in the Downtown District and signed up over forty businesses to light their buildings with white lights. This is a sight that will melt even the Grinch's heart!

Another new attraction is a wreath contest, affectionately titled “It’s a Wonderful Wreath.” Chairs of the Wreath Contest, Carol Tokarski with Craven Arts Council, and Judy Avery of the Sun Journal, signed up 25 businesses to compete for "best wreath depicting their business." Residents are encouraged to visit participating downtown businesses and then go to the Sun Journal web site and vote for their favorite. Five $20 gift certificates will be given away to people who vote online, and the business with the most popular wreath will win advertising space in the Sun Journal. So, be sure and vote for your favorite (or, vote early and vote often!).

Did you see Mommy kissing Santa Claus? Danny Batten of One Worlde Shop/Life is Good has installed Mistletoe Kissing Stations at Confluence, Nauti Paws, and the Cow Cafe. Last year our Mistletoe Kissing Stations were so popular, they made the news as far away as Illinois!

Nancy Fisher of the Salvation Army has arranged for the Salvation Army Carolers and Band members to perform at the corner of Pollock and Middle Streets each Friday evening at 6:30 pm. "The Salvation Army was formed during the time of Dickens, so it's only natural that we participate!" says Fisher. In addition to performing on Friday evenings, there is a toy collection box in the Santa House to collect toys for the Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program.

"Our goal is get the word out to the residents of New Bern and people from all over the region: Downtown New Bern is the best place to shop, dine, and visit during Christmas (and the rest of the year!)," says Janet. "With the help of Rick Lang of Twice as Nice and Darlene Brown of the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce, we have been spreading the word."

The Stewarts, a family of sharecroppers, reside in rural North Carolina two miles outside of Kinston. On this midday, we find them gathered in the living room of their small plank farmhouse two days before Christmas in early 1960s. Snow is falling as they sing holiday songs. Mama and Daddy Stewart, along with their two grandchildren, are heading to town in the old pick-up truck. Left behind are six other children. Sibling bantering, an unexpected guest, a special cake, an advancing snow storm and a stranger on the muddy path make this a hilarious original family play -- reminding us of a distant time no more and the true meaning of Christmas. Not Charles Dickens; not Ebineezer Scrooge; and certainly not Ghosts of New Bern ™ and Carolina Carriage Tours who are pleased to announce that this December they will one gain offer the “Spirits of Christmas Holiday Hayride” ™ of New Bern’s Downtown Historic District.

The hour-long hayrides begin at Morgan’s Tavern and Grill (235 Craven St.) at 7:30 PM each Friday and Saturday of December.

Guests will ride in the rustic comfort of a tractor-drawn hay wagon and will view New Bern’s beautiful holiday decorations and hear holiday-themed tales of the strange occurrences, unusual happenings and ghosts that haunt many of New Bern’s homes and buildings. The tour’s stories are based on the book, Ghosts of New Bern © by Joseph and Joyce O’Callahan. Holiday Hayride ™ guests will be treated to a most entertaining and “spirited” evening.

Holiday Mystery Dinner

A Victorian-style Father Christmas has been kidnapped by ne’er-do-wells and Mother Christmas has hauled out a crew of fictional misfit Christmas characters to help her solve the mystery and save the day. This is the set-up for Athens of the South’s second mystery dinner play, “The Miscreants’ Christmas,” December 10, 11, 17 and 18 at the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina in New Bern. Performances begin at 7 p.m.

The play, written by company director Bill Hand, is peopled with famous (and not-so-famous) characters from popular Christmas tales. From Charles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol comes Ebenezer Scrooge (played by John Baldwin), who still battles with his crotchety ways; his goodness-mentor, a grown-up Tiny Tim (Daryl Harris), whose innocence has gone just a little awry, and an emo-like, tricky Want (Cassi Young), half of the “Ignorance and Want” children housed under the Ghost of Christmas Present’s robe. From O. Henry’s Gift of the Magi comes Della (Nancy Hitchcock) and James (Bill Hand), a naïve and good-natured but penniless husband and wife. Rounding out the cast is the mischievous Jack Frost.

Mother Christmas (Sue Baldwin) calls the characters together for a council to read the ransom letter and try to figure out who took Father Christmas and why. Audience interaction is a major part of the show, with diners being selected to do small parts on stage, and with characters talking with them and answering questions between scenes. Before the last act, everyone gets to take a guess as to who took Father Christmas and why. The closest guess wins a prize.
Dinner is provided by Annabelle’s and the dinner is BYOB.

These people, living in over 30 nations in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. Written by by Peter I. Tchaikovsky, the ballet was a commission by the Russian Imperial Opera Directorate based on the E.T.A. Hoffman story The Nutcracker and Mouse King. Tchaikovsky himself did not think much of his production but ballet-goers around the world have consistently acclaimed the work. For many the highlight of Christmas is hearing the beautiful tones of Tchaikovsky’s music as the snow begins to fall with the dancing Snowflakes or feeling the pure sweetness as they watch the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Be greeted by Christmas Carolers as you enter the Historic Athens Theatre to enjoy this year’s ballet production presented as a bedtime story for Marie, as told by her Mother. Join in the magical adventure that includes a grand Christmas party, twirling snowflakes, toy soldiers, life-size mice, and a journey to the Land of the Sweets with its beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy and its Waltzing Flowers.

Carolina Creations is celebrating Valentine's Day with handmade cards from Craven County School Children - Art from Our Hearts. For the 4th year the Craven County School Children have created fabulous, one of a kind Valentines for your loved ones. These cards are sold for $3 each with all proceeds going to the Art Program of the Craven County Schools.

An opening reception at the gallery, 317 Pollock Street is on Friday, January 29 from 5-7 pm. The cards will be on sale from January 27 through February 14. Come early for the best selection!!

New Bern Civic Theatre presents "Noises Off" January 16, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 at 8 pm, January 17 and 24 at 2 pm at the Theatre, 414 Pollock St. In this plot author Michael Frayn plays on the concept of a play within a play, in this case a dreadful sex comedy titled Nothing On - the type of play in which young girls run about in their underwear, old men drop their trousers and many doors slam open and shut. BBQ In Blue Jeans offers an evening of good food and great music! The very popular annual fundraiser benefits the New Bern Firemen's Museum and will be held on Friday, January 22, 2010, beginning at 6 p.m. in New Bern’s Riverfront Convention Center.

Barbeque master Tommy Moore of Moore's Barbeque is the event’s major sponsor, donating barbeque and all the fixings. Tickets are only $25 per person and include all food and beverages, as well as dancing to some of the area’s finest bands. Doors open at 6 p.m. Dinner is at 7 p.m.

Messiah 2009

2009 Messiah

James Ogle, former Artistic Director of the Boise Philharmonic Association and former Associate Conductor of the North Carolina Symphony, will return to New Bern for the twenty-seventh performance of George Friderick Handel’s Messiah,

Begun in 1981, the performances have featured a 135-member chorus from the surrounding area, including Beaufort, Craven, Carteret, Jones, New Hanover, Pamlico and Wayne counties. Accompanying the singers will be an orchestra composed of members of the North Carolina Symphony, many of whom have returned to New Bern each year for this occasion. The production is sponsored by the Craven Messiah Chorus, an organization originally founded by Centenary United Methodist Church, Christ Episcopal Church, First Baptist Church, and First Presbyterian Church. Friday December 11!

Come visit the world of Charles Dickens’ imagination by learning the very dances young Ebenezer Scrooge may have footed at the Christmas party of his employer, Mr. Fezziwig…. At the Bank of the Arts in downtown New Bern, on December 11!

The dances will be English Country Dances from the Dickensian era, as well as simple modern contra dances. All the dances will be taught: no prior experience is required, and you don’t need to bring a partner. A beginner’s lesson will be offered at 7:00 p.m., and the dancing starts at 7:30.

Instruction and dance prompting will be provided by Mr. Fezziwig (Art Langrish), and fiddler Simon Spalding; Mrs. Fezziwig (Gloria Langrish) will also perform on the violin. Dancers are encouraged to come in clothing of the 19th century; but of course this is not required.

Voci Allegre Vocal Ensemble 2009

Voci Allegre vocal ensemble is pleased to announce “A Very British Christmas,” its first concert of the 2009-2010 season. Sponsored jointly by Craven Arts Council and Gallery and First Baptist Church of New Bern, the performance will be held in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church (Middle Street) and begins at 6:00 PM on December 4, 2009.

Director Lorraine Hale has assembled a program of old favorites and lesser-known gems of literature from England, Wales, and the Isle of Man. Composers of the works to be presented range from the prolific “anonymous” to Henry VIII.

Performing with Hale will be soprano Brenda Hardee and contralto Yvonne Templeton. The group will be assisted by accompanist Barry Templeton.

The concert will include haunting melodies from medieval abbeys to rollicking secular folk tunes. A special feature will be Richard Smart’s song about the arrival of “Sir Christemas,” who appears and announces in French (!) the birth of Jesus and encourages the song’s auditors to drink a happy toast to the newborn savior.

The Christmas Tree Ship Is Coming In 2009

The Skipjack ADA MAE will be sailing into the Port of New Bern with another load of fresh cut Christmas trees on Saturday, November 28.“Skipjack Point” on the water at the end of Pollock Street, behind the Galley Store, at 3 PM to watch ADA MAE sail inADA MAE will be docking at the galley Store Marina and off loading fresh cut North Carolina Christmas trees.The trees will be sold as a fund raiser for Carolina Coastal Classrooms Inc. a local non-profit environmental education program.Come out and welcome the ship and this old fashioned tradition back to the of New Bern. The skipjack ADA MAE was built in 1915 at Rose Bay, North Carolina.She is the last examle of a commercial working sailing vessel built in North Carolina. The Gift of the Magi 2009

The story tells of a husband and wife, Jim and Della who, being very poor, agree not to exchange presents for Christmas. Although their friends advise against it, Jim sells his heirloom watch to buy Della elaborate combs for her hair. Della sells her long, beautiful hair in order to buy Jim a chain for his watch. The true meaning of Christmas will come to life through this inspirational piece. The music is lyrical and uplifting - and appropriate for all ages!

Each year, downtown homeowners open their homes so that ticket holders may explore and appreciate the exquisite gardens and architectural history of houses on tour.

Most downtown historic churches are also open on tour days.Celebrate spring in New Bern!Also at Carolina Creations we will have a reception open to the public from 5-8 pm on Friday evening where Jan Francoeur will be demonstrating making tiles. Each year she make tiles of the homes that are on the home tour.

We're calling this evening "Creative Hands" and there will be demonstrations at Art & Materials, Bank of the Arts and Artworks & Co. This event is free and open to the public.

The Middle Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival
New Bern, N. C.
Sunday March 15th

This year is the 8th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival. The Parade
Committee once again wishes to extend a warm invitation for your group/business/family to be one of the many participants in this year’s Parade. First time this year we are inviting bicycles decorate your bike and ride in the parade.

The Parade will be formed at George Street between the Police Station and the cemetery, marching to Broad St. through Middle Street, ending on South Front Street in front of the Farmer’s Market. This year we are pleased to announce that the Farmer’s Market will be open form 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. vendor’s will be putting on their green for Patty’s Day.

There will be Irish entertainment and Irish wares call for more info.

This year we are asking for a parade donation of $20.00 to help cover parade expenses. Due to the economy we appreciate all your help in keeping this event for our city. Again, thank you. We have had a great season in Downtown New Bern this year, from the Story "A Christmas Carol" in our store fronts, to the pet parade, to the Trolley Tours (which got rave reviews!), to Tryon Palace being named by Time Magazine as one of the Top 10 places in the country to get into the Christmas spirit. From one of our Downtown Real Estate Agents

"Throughout my career I have certainly been aware that regardless of where people decide to live in the New Bern area, downtown is what sells them on New Bern.

This weekend was no exception. Fortunately I had out of town clients in town this weekend. One couple from the Midwest and one from California. After the first afternoon my folks (from California) were still a little lukewarm. But I encouraged them to stay at the Comfort Suites, told them about all the events going on downtown Friday night and guided them to a downtown restaurant for dinner.

The next morning before I picked them up to continue our tour, they walked all over and visited more shops....including Mitchell's Hardware store. By the time I picked them up Saturday they were thrilled and had decided to delay their departure for the beach and stay over another night.

At the end of Saturday as we came back into town and they saw all the folks lined up at the gates of Tryon Palace and the Fife and Drum Corps and they wanted to know what was going on. They couldn't wait for me to drop them off at the hotel to pick up their jackets so they could head back downtown to the festiivites. They were totally charmed.

So.............Downtown does it again!"

"I was in Atlanta working last weekend, when I over heard a friend, of a friend, talking about their mother coming to New Bern this past Friday night. I asked was she from the area and she said " Oh no... my mother and her 2 sisters are making the trip down from Virginia for their annual Christmas overnight"...

"Each year they go to a different place to shop, eat, and enjoy the attmosphere of the spirit... they are all excited about some Dickens Christmas in Downtown.... they read in a magazine. I just gleemed and wanted to make sure I told you how well the publicity really did hit all areas!

As far as the Pet Parade I stopped counting after 70 dogs registered!!! There were more than 150 people also walking, but again, I lost count. As for next year, I already have people who tell me they "have connections"... ha ha and will have us an escort... : ) Even floats and music customers of mine are telling me, we will have. They said you thought this was something, wait until next year.... WE ARE GOING ALL OUT.... I just smiled and said okay we will...

It was a wonderful morning and I must say my first personal bit of Christmas spirit came ( along with tear filled eyes) when we turned the Craven / Pollock Street Corner and the kids from the Christ Church who were waiting so patiently all started cheering... " they are coming, the doggies are coming!"

It was a overwhelming feeling of emotion as these little guys cheered with store owners, coffee drinkers from the coffee shops, retail shops owners, customers came out of stores, cars stopped and rolled down windows and chanted and cheered! That is what the spirit of Christmas is about... laughter, cheers and happiness! Again, A HUGE Thank you to ALL of you for supporting this event.

May each of you have "that moment" this year, when you feel no words can describe your emotions.... that is simply what I felt that day surrounded by so many of my wonderful customers and all my furry four legged friends.....
